Pius VII and Leo XII – Mariology in the Post-Napoleonic Restoration

The pontificates of Pius VII (1800-1823) and Leo XII (1823-1829) constitute the era of the post-Napoleonic Restoration. The Church, which emerged devastated from the French Revolution, finds in Mary a sign of hope and reconstruction. The numerous Marian documents of these two popes, sixteen for Pius VII (nn. 232-253) and five for Leo XII (nn. 249-253), reflect the intense religiosity of the early nineteenth century.

Pius VII (1800-1823), nn. 232-253

Pius VII, the pope who crowned Napoleon (1804) and was later imprisoned by him (1809-1814), is the pope of Marian perseverance. His sixteen Marian documents, the largest number by any pope in this period, cover:

  • n. 232, Epistle “Id officii” (January 9, 1801): Restoration of Marian devotions in the dioceses devastated by the Revolution
  • nn. 233-235, Briefs of 1805: Privileges of the Rosary and of the Scapular for the missions of Latin America and Africa
  • n. 236, Marian Preface (May 17, 1806): One of the most beautiful texts of Pius VII, a liturgical preface in which Mary is sung as the “dawn of the salvation of the world”
  • nn. 237-248, Documents of 1807-1821: Grants of indulgences for the Rosary, the Angelus, the month of Mary, the crown of the twelve stars, and other popular Marian devotions

«In tempestatibus nostri temporis, Virgo Maria est ancora spei nostrae et refugium certissimum: ipsa enim, quae serpentem antiquum calcavit, et nos tuebitur adversus hostes fidei»

In the storms of our time, the Virgin Mary is the anchor of our hope and the most certain refuge: for she, who trampled the head of the ancient serpent, will also defend us against the enemies of the faith.

Leo XII (1823-1829), nn. 249-253

Leo XII, the pope of the Restoration, continued the work of Pius VII in rebuilding Marian devotion. His five documents (nn. 249-253) include rescripts and briefs on the Rosary, the Angelus, and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the last of these emerging in the spirituality of the nineteenth century after the revelations of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque and in anticipation of the visions of Fatima.
