Aristide

Aristide é um dos primeiros apologistas cristãos, provavelmente ateniense.

O que é a Apologia?

Defesa racional da fé cristã em Deus, Cristo, a Igreja e o senso comum de todos os homens. As argumentações eram geralmente direcionadas aos gentios ou judeus. Também em comunidades cristãs não católicas, para membros mais hesitantes da Igreja, ou simplesmente para fiéis que desejam aprofundar sua fé com consciência, como diz São Pedro: “Antes, santifiquem Cristo como Senhor em seus corações. Estejam sempre preparados para responder a qualquer que lhes perguntar a razão da esperança que há em vocês” (1 Ped 3,15).

Para defender o cristianismo, Aristide escreveu uma obra dirigida ao imperador Adriano (117-138) e Antonino Pio (138-161), chamada de Apologia.

A obra é dividida em 17 capítulos onde defende as razões do monoteísmo e a existência de um Deus criador e conservador do universo.

Nesta obra, Aristide divide a humanidade em quatro grupos: os Bárbaros, os Gregos, os Hebreus e os Cristãos. Os últimos são aqueles que têm uma noção exata do verdadeiro Deus e realizam um culto autêntico, com uma compreensão superior, distinguindo-se pela integridade de vida.

# Apology and Marian Theology

The *Apology* aims to critique polytheism and barbarian magic, denouncing Greek mythology as absurd (*ad absurdum*). It criticizes Jews for the externality of their worship and superstitious way of living, while respecting their conception of God. For Aristides, Christians are a new people originating from Jesus Christ, the divine Man, though he critiques the deification of man by pagans.

The *Apology* has survived primarily in Syriac and Armenian versions, with the Greek text largely lost. This work contains a significant Marian text in Syriac, valuable for its ancient date and as a witness to 2nd-century Mariology. Here, Mary is invoked as a “Hebrew virgin,” “daughter of man,” contrasting Jesus as “Son of God.”

> “The Christians trace the beginning of their religion to Jesus Christ, who is called Son of God Most High. It is said that God descended from heaven and took flesh from a Hebrew virgin, and dwelt in the daughter of man, the Son of God.” (*Apology* II, 6-7)
