From this comes the motto «Totus Tuus ego sum» («I am all yours»), which Pope John Paul II chose for his pontificate, making it a synthesis of his entire Marian spirituality.
From «Dedication» to «Trust»
Recent theology, especially since the Second Vatican Council and the encyclical Redemptoris Mater, has deepened the meaning of this surrender. More than a legal act of «dedication» (a term that strictly belongs to God), it is spoken of as trust – the filial confidence with which the disciple «accepts Mary as his own», in the image of the beloved disciple who received her at the Cross (John 19:27).
