Corredentora: The Cooperation of Mary in Redemption

Definition

The term Corredentora (or *Corredentress*) refers to Mary’s cooperation in the work of redemption accomplished by Christ. It does not imply that Mary co-redeemed on equal footing with Christ, but rather that she actively participated in the single redemptive act of God’s Son. Foundations

The foundations of Mary’s redemption: (1) her Fiat at the Anunciation that consented to the Incarnation and thus to Redemption. (2) Jesus’ offering at the Presentation in the Temple. (3) Mary’s compassion at the Calvary, where she cooperated in spirit with the sacrifice of her Son.

Magisterium Position

The Magisterium often uses language of Mary’s cooperation in redemption (LG 61: “cooperated in a special way in the work of the Savior”), but has never dogmatically defined the title *Corredentora*. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has been cautious about defining it dogmatically, considering that its content is already sufficiently expressed in existing documents.
