The Song of Hope

Mary and the Magnificat: The Canticle of Christian HopeIn his *Angelus* prayer on August 15, 2022, Pope Francis stated that the *Magnificat* is a canticle of praise that can be aptly defined as *”the canticle of hope.”* In it, the Virgin Mary, with great realism, rejoices in the wonders the Lord has wrought in her life and contemplates God’s work throughout the history of His people. From her song, a vast prayer of gratitude, born of the action of the Holy Spirit who inspires her from within, flows out in beauty, reflecting her concrete life.Mary did not surrender her life to a distant, imaginary, insensitive, unknown god, fashioned according to human measure. She is fully devoted to the Holy One of Israel, to God who is Emmanuel, to God who is infinite love. For this reason, the Virgin, filled with gratitude, praises the God of hope who chose her and built in her the holiest of His dwellings. She recognizes the abundance of God’s generosity and, in contrast to the lazy servant who hid his received gifts in a cloth (cf. Lk 19:20), she overflows with hope and faithfulness, joy and faith. Indeed, in the Virgin’s exuberant joy, God Himself overflows, as the most precious gift she shares, for in her, all is for the glory of God.

Mary Remembers the Wonders of God: A Prophetic Testimony

Mary, in her song of praise, remembers the wonders God has worked throughout salvation history. Within this history, she offers special thanks for the extraordinary wonder of being chosen to receive the Incarnation of Christ, whom her people will call “the Son of Mary” (Mk 6:3). Thus, the Servant of the Lord recalls the promise made to Abraham and his descendants, and recognizes, in the concrete events of her life, the fulfillment of that promise. Her hope joins the long line of hope that has inspired generations, culminating in Christ, whom she gave birth to, fulfilling the Scriptures.The Mother of the Lord’s praise is a prophetic testimony that transcends time, affirming that true hope never fails and never disappoints. The Holy God does not deceive those who embrace His will and fulfill it with generosity. The promise of a hopeful future is not confined to the past, nor is it a fatalism dictated by fate. God guarantees us a future of hope, especially in moments when hope seems non-existent and the future appears bleak. This is how Mary sang in her song of hope. This is how pilgrims of hope should sing in this jubilee year.Rev.
