Mulieris Dignitatem
The *Mulieris Dignitatem* is an Apostolic Letter of Pope John Paul II on the dignity and vocation of women, published on August 15, 1988, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The document is one of the deepest reflections of the Magisterium on female anthropology, with an extensive treatment of Mary as the paradigm of all femininity and the mediation of the “female genius” in the history of salvation.

Historical Context
*Mulieris Dignitatem* was published in response to the 1987 Synod of Bishops on the “Laity.” John Paul II seized the opportunity to offer a systematic anthropological-theological reflection on women, something never before accomplished by the Magisterium. The document draws on Genesis 1-2 theology, Christology (Jesus’ relationship with women), Mariology (Mary as the New Eve and “woman” in John 2 and Revelation 12), and Ecclesiology (the Church as the Bride).

> … (Excerpts from the text follow, detailing Mary’s role as the paradigm of femininity and her mediation in salvation history) …We have decided to contemplate, in the light of the new revelation of his word, the vocation and dignity of women as announced in the Gospel according to Luke: «The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore, the child to be born will be holy, and he will be called Son of God» (Lk 1:35). This divine word spoken to Mary at the Annunciation opens up a perspective through which the vocation and dignity of women are rightly understood. For in Mary, as Mother of God, and also because of the faith she had «believed», the mystery of «woman» is attained in its fullness. (n. 4)Mary is «full of grace» (Lk 1:28): this «fullness of grace» indicates the supernatural gift of the whole of human life, which comes only from God’s grace in Christ and is proper to him to whom God has granted this grace. Through the Incarnation of the Word, the whole human history, and the history of women, acquires a new vertical dimension. […] Mary takes a singular and unique place in this history: she is principal and exemplary. (n. 5)«His mother stood at the cross» (Jn 19:25). This expression of loyalty at the cross is a remarkable «follow-through» of the most faithful. Thus, women who adhere to Christ in faith and in love bear witness to his mission in the most faithful way. (n. 15)In this perspective, Mary is present in all the salvific elements of Christ’s life mysteries, from conception and birth to death and resurrection. And this presence of faith, hope, and charity is not only external but internal and vital: she is the Mother of the Church and the spiritual Mother of all. (n. 27)We desired to contemplate, from a new perspective, the dignity and vocation of women in the light of the words of the Gospel according to Luke: «The Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore, the child to be born will be holy, and he will be called Son of God» (Lc 1:35). This divine word addressed to Mary at the Annunciation opens up a perspective from which one can understand correctly the vocation and dignity of women. Indeed, in Mary, as Mother of God, but also in virtue of the faith with which she «believed», the mystery of «woman» attains its perfection. (n. 4)Mary is «full of grace» (Lc 1:28): this «fullness of grace» indicates the gift of all supernatural life, which comes only from God’s grace in Christ and is proper to one to whom God grants such grace. Through the Incarnation of the Word, the entire human history, and the history of women, acquires a new vertical dimension. […] Mary occupies in this history of «woman» a totally singular and unique place: the principal and exemplary place. (n. 5)«His mother was standing at the cross» (Jo 19:25). This faithfulness to the cross is an admirable expression of the most faithful «follow[ing] Christ». Thus, women, adhering by faith and love to Christ, give the most faithful testimony to His mission. (n. 15)From this perspective, Mary is present in the mysteries of Christ’s life in all salvific elements, from conception and birth to death and resurrection. And this presence of faith, hope, and charity is not only external but internal and vital: she is the Mother of the Church and the spiritual mother of all. (n. 27)
Mary and the «Female Genius»
The great contribution of *Mulieris Dignitatem* to mariology is the introduction of the concept of «female genius»: Mary is the perfect paradigm of the «eternal female». John Paul II identifies in women two paradigmatic vocational calls, motherhood (generation and care for life) and virginity (total gift to God), both fully realized in Mary, who is simultaneously Virgin and Mother. This bipolarity of Mariology is the center of the female anthropology of the document.
Theological Meaning
*Mulieris Dignitatem*This is the most extensive magisterial document on women in the history of the Church. From a mariological perspective, it revisits and deepens Chapter VIII of Lumen Gentium and Redemptoris Mater, adding the anthropological dimension of femininity. The concept of Mary as the “New Eve,” a key hermeneutical concept throughout the letter, was already present in the Fathers (Justin, Irenaeus, Tertullian) and is here resumed and systematized with rigorous philosophical-theological rigor.
