Mulieris Dignitatem – apostolic letter of John Paul II on the dignity of woman (Full text)

Mulieris Dignitatem is the Apostolic Letter of Pope John Paul II on the dignity and vocation of woman, published on August 15, 1988, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The document is one of the most profound reflections of the Magisterium on feminine anthropology, with an extensive treatment of the figure of Mary as the paradigm of all femininity and the mediation of the “feminine genius” in the history of salvation.

Historical context

Mulieris Dignitatem was published in response to the 1987 Synod of Bishops on the “lay faithful.” John Paul II took the occasion to work out an anthropological and theological reflection on woman, something that had never been done so systematically by the Magisterium. The document draws on the theology of Gen 1-2, Christology (the relationship of Jesus with women), Mariology (Mary as the New Eve and the “woman” of Jn 2 and Rev 12) and ecclesiology (the Church as bride).

IOANNES PAULUS PP. II

English translation (Mariological excerpts)

JOHN PAUL PP. II

We wished to contemplate, from a new point of view, the dignity and the vocation of woman in the light of the words of the Gospel according to Luke: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God” (Lk 1:35). This divine word addressed to Mary at the Annunciation opens a perspective from which the vocation and the dignity of woman can be correctly understood. In Mary, indeed, as Mother of God, but also by virtue of the faith with which she “believed,” the mystery of “woman” attains its perfection. (n. 4)

Mary is “full of grace” (Lk 1:28): this “fullness of grace” indicates the gift of the whole supernatural life, which comes only from the grace of God in Christ and belongs properly to the one to whom God grants such grace. Through the Incarnation of the Word, the whole of human history, and the history of woman, acquires a new vertical dimension. […] In this history of “woman” Mary holds a wholly singular and unique place: the principal and exemplary place. (n. 5)

“Standing by the cross of Jesus was His Mother” (Jn 19:25). This fidelity of the cross is an admirable expression of the most faithful “sequela Christi.” In this way women, cleaving to Christ by faith and love, give the most faithful witness to His mission. (n. 15)

In this perspective, Mary is present in the mysteries of the life of Christ in all their saving elements, from the conception and the birth to the death and the resurrection. And this presence of faith, hope and charity is not only external, but interior and vital: she is the Mother of the Church and the spiritual Mother of all. (n. 27)

Mary and the “Feminine genius”

The great contribution of Mulieris Dignitatem to Mariology is the introduction of the concept of the “feminine genius”: Mary is the perfect paradigm of the “eternal feminine” theologically understood. John Paul II identifies in woman two paradigmatic vocational callings, motherhood (the generation and care of life) and virginity (total self-gift to God), both fully realized in Mary, who is at once Virgin and Mother. This Mariological bipolarity is the center of the document’s feminine anthropology.

Theological significance

Mulieris Dignitatem is the most extensive magisterial document on woman in the history of the Church. From the Mariological point of view, it takes up and deepens Chapter VIII of Lumen Gentium and Redemptoris Mater, adding to them the anthropological dimension of femininity. The concept of Mary as the “New Eve,” the hermeneutical key of the whole letter, was already present in the Fathers (Justin, Irenaeus, Tertullian) and is here taken up again and systematized with philosophical and theological rigor.
